Why is finding good wine so hard?

Why is finding good wine so hard?

"No such thing as a bad wine"

We like to say there’s no such thing as a bad wine, and that the real problem is people drinking the wrong wine. It’s only half true - there are a lot of bad wines out there, and a lot of distinctly average ones too.

What we’re trying to get at though, is that the most important thing when it comes to picking wine is your own personal taste.

There are plenty of people trying to help you find “good” wine; critics with points systems, competitions where wines can win medals or shops offering space by the till for their “Wine of the Week”.

Even historic wine regions labelling Chateaux or vineyards as Grand Cru or Premier Cru is a way of signposting people towards “good” wine.

The problem with all of these however, is that even if a wine is technically “good”, it doesn’t mean you’re going to like it. They’re all recommendations based on someone else’s tastes - and don’t take your likes & dislikes into the equation.

What if you like putting ice cubes in your rosé? What if you think that 95 point Châteauneuf-du-Pape tastes like engine oil?

Everyone has different tastes but the bigger part of the problem is that many people struggle to describe their tastes in wine.

Most of us can probably say if we like a wine or not, but if you asked us what a wine was like, unless you’ve done a proper course, or have read hundreds of wine books, it becomes a struggle to find the right words.

At Wine Unpacked we really want to get people drinking the right wine and so after a lot of trial, customer research & versions of products that weren’t quite right - we’re happy to say that we can now go help to solve this problem.

Our Taste-Finder kit lets you taste 12 key styles of wine, which helps you figure out what you like and also teaches you the lingo so you know how to describe it when you’re in a restaurant.

Then your results feed into your unique taste profile, so you can easily remember what it was you did & didn’t like.

Then off the back of this - we’re able to offer wines personalised to your tastes in a variety of formats to suit your needs. Either subscribe for regular deliveries or buy them as & when the wine cellar / fridge / cupboard runs dry.
